Since it opened in 1967 Plunket College has always been open and inclusive in its admission of students, being particularly mindful of the disadvantaged and students with special needs. The college continuously strives to be a welcoming place for students of all ages who may wish to enrol for the many and varied programmes on offer in the college, both day and night. Every attempt is made to exercise justice and fairness in all our college procedures and our behaviour management strategies. The college is committed to the successful implementation of recent educational legislation, in particular the Education Act 1998, the Education Welfare Act 2000, the Equal Status Act 2000 and the Education for persons with Special Needs Act 2004.
As a college which operates under the auspices of the City of Dublin Vocational Education Committee, our admissions policy is guided by the following general principles as outlined in CDVEC policy document; “General Rules and Regulations for Schools, Colleges, other Centres and the Classes and Activities operating under the authority of the City of Dublin Vocational Education Committee”. “Admission to a particular course/activity is subject to places being available and is governed by three principles:
• That, in the professional judgement of the School Authority (the term ‘School Authority as in these regulations, indicates the Chief Executive Officer, or an officer delegated to act on his behalf), and following an interview (if deemed appropriate) the student/participant is suitable for a course/activity.
• That, in the professional judgement of the School Authority, the student/participant, because of previous education, training or experience, is considered likely to benefit from attendance.
• That participation will contribute positively to the course/ activity and in no way infringe upon the opportunities or rights of other students or staff.
All disputes in relation to admission will be referred to the C.E.O. or Deputy Officer”.
Applicants for courses are required to provide all relevant background information as part of the application procedure. Acceptance and continued participation on the course is conditional upon disclosure of such information.
The college expects high standards of behaviour and commitment from all its students. Failure to comply adequately with the college rules and procedures will result in sanctions being applied in accordance with the college Code of Conduct.
• Junior cycle and senior cycle students are expected to provide a satisfactory written explanation from their parent/guardians for all absences, in accordance with the provisions of the Education Welfare Act 2000.
• Post-Leaving Certificate students and other adult students who have been absent without satisfactory explanation for any fifteen days will be deemed to have opted out of the course. In general a minimum of 75% attendance is required. Re-affirmation of enrolment can occur only with the permission of the Principal.
• Students/participants on other programmes must comply with the rules and regulations on attendance relevant to that programme.

All students admitted to the college are required to comply fully with the rules and procedures of the college and the City of Dublin VEC.The college expects high standards of behaviour and commitment from all its students. Attendance Requirement
The college expects the very highest standards with regard to attendance and punctuality from all its students. All students should note carefully and fully comply with the following extract from CDVEC “General Rules and Regulations for Schools”, detailing attendance requirements: Every course/activity requires a commitment to attend all parts of the programme on offer fully and punctually. Any student unable to fulfil this commitment may be required to leave the course/activity. Absence for reasons covered by a medical certificate fall outside minimum attendance requirements.• Junior cycle and senior cycle students are expected to provide a satisfactory written explanation from their parent/guardians for all absences, in accordance with the provisions of the Education Welfare Act 2000.

Appeals Procedure
In accordance with the provisions of the 1998 Education Act an appeal may be made by the parent of a student or by the student where he/she is aged 18 years or over, against a decision by the Board of Management/School Authorities not to enrol a student.
