The technical nature of the Leaving Certificate programme offered in the College has always appealed to a wide range of students, whether they aspired to places in Third Level Colleges, apprenticeships or other employments.
Students follow a programme from the following list of subjects:
• English
• Irish
• Maths
• Art
• Business
• French
• Biology
• Construction Studies
• Engineering
• Design and Communication Graphics
• Religious Knowledge
• Physical Education
• Physics & Chemistry
• History
• Geography
Not all subjects may be on offer in any given year.
This 2 year programme differs from the traditional Leaving Certificate course in terms of subject content and methodology. Students accumulate credits by attending school regularly and completing modules of work satisfactorily in the different subject areas. They are also required to complete a number of student tasks for which they receive marks. So they are building up credits on a continuous basis as they make their way through the two year programme. There is less emphasis in this programme on the final examinations, which
attract only one third, approximately, of the total marks available.
The subjects studied are as follows:
• Maths
• Irish
• French
• Art
• Science
• English & Communications
• Social Education
• Leisure & Recreation
• Information Technology
• Vocational Preparation & Guidance
• Engineering
• Religious Knowledge
• Graphics & Construction
The programme is geared towards preparing students for adult and working life. Students may subsequently proceed to a PLC course to further develop their education and training. At that stage the option of a suitable Third Level course becomes available.
